Help ID Trajan Dupondius 2
« on: November 14, 2008, 11:20:05 am »
Hi
Here a second dupondius of Trajan which I do not manage to identify.
On the Reverse, I read: TR POT… /SC.
But I also read between T and R: SP - PP . What means this inscription?

Thank you

You do not say the size annd weight again so I think this is an AS not Dupondius, This would be RIC II # 434 (modified this looks like it is radiate so I would think Dupondius also but RIC shows an AS, I will need to check closer)
SPQR
from forum "   S. P. Q. R.   Letters which were used by
the Romans on their coins,    standards,   and
public monuments, to signify Senatus Populusque
Romanus. (The Senate and the Roman People). --
These initials appear on several coins of uncertain families.  They stand as an inscription by them-
selves,  with some type or other,  on coins of
Augustus, GalbaFaustina jun.,  Gallienus, &c.

Good Luck
Pete

Tanit can you tell if it is Radiate?  I have lightened the picture and can not tell for sure or read all of the legends.  Below is the RIC citation.

Good Luck

Obv. must be laureate, since this is an As rev. type that was never used on dupondii.

You are right, by comparing the two coins which I posted here with dupondii that I have, it is clear that they are both As.

Thank you very much
