Hi Mike,

Nice coin! Your attribution seems right on to me. I especially like the R Q exergue; Rome mint, 4th officina. This is the first Valens I can recall seeing with a Rome mint. Cool!

This is RIC IX 17b Rome, classed as scarce. Just with RQ is from the second period, 24th August 367 to 17th November 375.
You've all got some peace from me now until next Monday - it's our annual festival at the w/e (Slayer is headliner Sunday) and I won't have my RICs with me ...

GREAT Coin.............That is an interesting "nub" behind Valens head and Vic's wing. This must have been a coin from a cast "tree" type of flan. Can't say that I have seen too many, but have read about them.

I may have not used the correct term, but if my guess is right the flans were made by casting into a mold with a main branch "trunk" with side branches going to each flan. This would look like a tree if you held it upside down. I will try to find a picture of it or GOD forbid...........draw it and post it later when I have more time on my hands.

Casting tree is correct, but they have quite a few names. Casting sprue is another. Its faster than cutting the flans from sheet metal.
