Crusader State ?
« on: October 06, 2008, 03:17:52 pm »
Can someone identify this tiny bronze coin?

14-16 mm / 1,59 g

The combination of Christ and Arab script probably originates from a crusader state, ca. 1000-1200 AD.

No matches on online references so far.

Thanks

Interesting!

There appears to be a date at the bottom -- 1433 or 433, I am not sure which.  433 would make it about 1055 if an SH date,  or  1042 if an AH date.  I am VERY interested to see if anyone recognizes this one!

What beautiful coin!

Probably, an XI cent. norman copper follaro, struck in Bari or Messina, both in Southern Italy.

Regards, Anto.

Yes, that's the most plausible answer. But I haven't found anything corresponding to it in Lucia Travaini's "La Monetazione nell'Italia Normanna", Rome 1995.

This book

"SPAHR, R., Le Monete Siciliane dai Bizantini a Carlo I d'Angio, 582- 1282. 2e ed. rev., Zurich-Graz, 1976"

may cointain this coin. But so far i didnĀ“t manage to see it.

So if someone has this, ...

Thanks so far for your efforts

I think this is Roger II struck at Messana/Messina (Biaggi 1219)
The picture of Biaggi isn't of help.
For comparison try:

Another in bad condition (the fifth specimen) here:

Thanks Luigi, you fixed it.

So the good old Maskukat Collection also has it!
