Help with reverse legend, Sept. Sev/Cybele riding
« on: August 27, 2008, 11:47:52 pm »
Evening all, I know what the coin is, but I am having trouble finding a reverse legend that fits. I am pretty sure that the coin is from Nikopolis ad Istrum, and under Magistrate Flavius Ulpianus (if that helps at all...) but the even the long reverses from Nikopolis ad Istrum that I can find end with PPOCICT...and this coin seems to go a bit further, by at least a P and possibly a PO. Hopefully this makes sense to someone, and as usual, any and all help is appreciated.

26mm 11.33g

Chris

PS this is the coin as I got it, and as goofy as this sounds, the color of the overcleaned areas seems almost to fit the lion motif...as worn and overcleaned as it is...it is turning in to one of my favorite coins!

I think you will find the magistrate is Aurelius Gallus, AVP ΓΑΛΛΟV

I think this is the same die:

Steve

P.S.
I can appreciate how it can be one of your favourites, even with the wear it has a lot of eye appeal.

Well, here's Septimius, but I seem to have a different die-pair:
• 25 08 02 AE 25 Nicopolis ad Istrum.  11.94g axis 6:00.  Issued by Gallus.  Septimius Severus, laureate, head to r.  [AVT L SE]PTI    SEVEROS P.  Rev., Cybele in mural crown with scepter, std. holding her tympanum, facing on lion springing to r.  [VP AVR . G]ALLOV. NIKOPOLITON PR[OS I].  Pick, AMNG I, 1, p. 367, no. 1316, Taf. XVIII, 9 (same dies as Pick's first ex., literatim).

Yours may be the other specimen that he cites.

Here's mine, a double die match, with my notes.

AE 26-28 Septimius Severus Gallus Nikopolis ad Istrum

Ob: L. CEPTI CEVHROC P (Varb. ss)
Laureate head right
Rev: VP.AVR.GALLOV NIKOPOLITW
Ex: PROC ICTRON
Cybele wearing mural crown, holding scepter and drum, riding on running lion right

AMNG I/1 1316 abweichungen (variant) #2 Musi Arigoni (Ex:PROC ICTR); [ON probably illegible]
I am a little dubious of the legend break with the nu on the right side of Cybele, as reported from Musi Arigoni; possible but unlikely.

Same reverse as AMNG I/1 1554 (with Caracalla obverse) as often under L. Aurelius Gallus.

That Julia Domna Steve attached is a nice crisp example of this reverse (1554).

Can you even call this coin overcleaned?
From the smoothness of the reverse I think it never had a patina but then again I have never done any harsh cleaning
so I'm not certain.

Andreas, good point. To tell you the truth, other than the high points (which could have been achieved naturally), there is no real sign. I just know the dealer that it came from and 9 times out of 10 his coins are overcleaned.  I guess I could give him the benefit of the doubt on this one.  ;D

Hi Arm,

That's a beautiful coin, with a pretty patina and full legends. :)
