CGPCGP's (Dino's) Befores and Afters
« on: August 21, 2008, 02:39:03 pm »
Finally done.  This was an interesting set to clean.

The two fallen horsemen (coins 1. and 4.) had reverses that were pretty encrusted so I wasn't very hopeful.  For that matter the obverses were a bit messy as well.  I was surprised to find the detail I did on them.

Coin 1. I probably could have cleaned a bit more, but I was worried about taking off the traces of silvering that are left (and frankly, in hand, the dirt that's left looks ok).

Coin 4., there's a blob of corrosion on the obverse.  I took most of it down, but it sits on a hairline crack through the coin and I was afraid I'd damage it if I kept going.

Coin 2. I basically cleaned dirt out of the pits, the rest of it was already pretty clean.  It would be a very nice coin absent all the pits.

Coin 3.  I though this one would come out the best because of the desert patina and the way the legend started coming through as I cleaned it.  Infortunately, it looks like it's suffering from crater face as well, so I stopped removing dirt so as not to really expose the pits.

Coin 5.  Dunno.  Not enough there for me to attribute.  Cleaned the dirt off and worked on the gunk in the hope that there was something under there.  There isn't.

The reverses of 1 and 4 are beautiful, from the pics (especially with 4) I would have never expected the amount of detail you were able to uncover. Great job!

Thanks Chris.  Appreciate the comments.  I was also pleasantly surprised with what resided under the crust there   :)

THanks, Andy.

Mike-

I cleaned it by dunking the coin in distilled water and scraping at it with an x-acto knife.  I then moved to a push pin for the lettering.

There are times when I envy the eyes and hands of the young and middle-aged.  I could not do those as you have done now, but I'd want to do them as well as yours.
