NumisWiki Ancient Glass Index
« on: August 15, 2008, 12:06:15 am »
I have added some pages to NumisWiki related to ancient glass and created an index page for them.  The index is here:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/numiswiki/view.asp?key=Glass

Please feel free to add to what I started.

Hi Joe,

I noticed one technique is missing or maybe you call it something else. I'm referring to reticulated glass, also known as diatreton, vas diatretum, and diatreta (plural). I doubt if anyone will be acquiring an object of this type intact but the possibility of finding a fragment does exist.
Diatreta glass is usually dated to the 4th century A.D. These objects consist of two shells, an inner and an outer one. The outer one was formed by grinding away the glass but leaving lugs to attach it to the inner one. The outer shell may consist of circles, letters from an inscription, or even figures.
These objects are sometimes referred to as cage cups. For examples, see The Cologne Cup; the Lycurgus Cup in the British Museum; the Milan Cup; and there may be one or part of one in Corning Museum, New York.

Hi Russ, The idea behind a wiki is that everyone can make additions, changes, improvements, etc.  You can make a new page for reticulated glass and add it to the index.

Hi Joe,

How do I add to a Wiki? Are there instructions? I'm not that great with computers and don't want to mess up anything by experimenting.
Thanks.
Russ

To edit a page, you click the edit tab. Make changes. When done click tha save button at the bottom.

To make a new page... First search for the page title you want.  It might already exist.  If it does, just edit it.  If it does not exist, there will be a link to create the page.  Create the page.  Type the page.  Save the page.

Much like using this board.  If you try to do it, you probably will find you can.

Hi Joe,

I was able to add "reticulated glass" but the program defaulted to double spacing so there is an empty line below it. I can't find the link to create the new page. Please, help. Thanks.

Another good thing about Wikis is that if you make a mistake or things don't work as you expect, it can always be corrected.

Typing enter makes a new paragraph, adding a blank space.  Holding the shift key down and pressing enter makes a new line, without a blank space.  This is true in many other programs, not just NumisWiki, so it is a good one to remember.

To make a new page, search for the page title you want to use. The page title will become an autolink, so ideally the page title is short and the best keyword or key phrase to link to the page.  See the first image below.

If the page does not exist, the search results will include a link to create the page.  See the second image below.  Clicking the link will open a blank page with the searched term as the URL. Type the new page as you would edit an existing page and save.

I already created the reticulated glass page.  (Just click on the words reticulated glass to see it.) Please feel free to edit it.

Hi Joe,

Sorry, I messed it up again. I tried following your instructions but they did not work. I'm using a Mac - could that be a problem?

Russ,

I work on a macbook and use Safari.  It works fine for me.

You have to be signed in for it to work.  Use the search box on the left to find your page.  Click on the "edit" tab on the top.  It will show code for a couple of seconds them switch to normal text.  Then you should be able edit the text normally.  Then click the save button at the bottom.

Hi Joe,

I have two questions or suggestions:
1.     Ancient (Late Roman, Byzantine, early Islamic) glass weights are glass but not vessels. Should they be included in your index? I notice cameos are listed and they are not vessels.

2.     When I was in "high school", we went on a class trip to the Corning Museum in upstate New York. The Smith Collection of ancient glass was on exhibit and I fell in love with the objects. Back then, it was an expensive purchase for a kid but I had to buy the catalogue of the exhibit and still have it. You may wish to consider it for your index. It is: The Corning Museum of Glass, Corning Glass Center. Glass from the Ancient World, The Ray Winfield Smith Collection. Corning, 1957; pp 298, 609 black & white photographic illustrations. Paper bound.

     Thanks.

If we have a page for glass weights, we should have a link on the glass index.  I don't think it would go under the list of vessel types.  It should be separate.

Hello!

Great idea this glass wiki!

May I add the Cassina Isings typology for the glass? It is maybe the most famous and the most currently used for ancient glass.
