Hello,
Please
help me ID this coin:
AE18mm 2.62g
observe:
Geta right with PSEPTGETAPIVSAVGBRIT around
reverse:
Aeternitas holding torch and globe with TRPIII COSIIPP around
I am almost positive it is a
mint made, pre silver foil
contemporary counterfit of
denarius RIC 0081.
Is this correct or is it an official issue I dont know about.
The coin is absolutly not a modern copy as I got it dirty and cleaned it. while cleaning I never detected any
silvering. I think it must surley have come from the
mint and is not a barberous copy as the
style is just about perferct for the
Rome mint. It is light for a
denarius of
Geta but this is because of the differnt densities of copper and silver. Was there a emergency bronze issue I dont know about that used the
denarius dies. Also puzzling is that it seems to be almost pure copper and not really a bronze coin at all (was this to aid in the adhesion of the silver foil to the core?) If it is a
contemporary counterfit has anyone seen one with the silver coating?
Anyways - If anyone knows anything more about this coin, I would appreciate the info, as it has been a real puzzler for me.
Thank You,
David S4
