Afternoon all,
I have been in a cleaning funk as of late, it seems that a lot of my normal dealers are running low-ish on decent uncleaneds to play with, so I figured it was time for a challange. I saw this guy on an
auction site and ended up getting him for pretty
cheap. As we all know, pictures can be decieving, and the
auction pic was sort of a mess. Suprisingly, my pic (below) is a pretty
good version, pretty much the way it looks in hand.
So, what do we have? Attrib
wise (and you should all know by now that I really have to
work at attribing) it looks to be an AR or
billon tetradrachm from possibly
Antioch and possibly
Caracalla. Cleaning
wise, it has it all. Green crusties,
red boils, and a
bit of dirt, BUT, the coin looks and feel sound and the detail is pretty nice...for that matter, from what I can see of the fields they are even smooth(ish). I will start off today with a simple water/nylon or sbbb brushing and then a diluted ammonia soak overnight. Tomorrow I will start picking.
I will keep you apprised of the progress as for once I actually thought to take a pic of the coin before I started cleaning! (Trust me, I almost started as soon as I got it, but then I remembered...just in time! lol)
