Second century indian coin
« on: June 02, 2008, 11:27:54 pm »
I bought this small coin (about 12 mm) eighteen years ago in a store selling all sorts of unusual and interesting things, among them a few ancient coins.
It is said to be from second century India. Does anybody has more information about it? Thanks!

The dating you were given is about a millenium off. Your coin dates to c. AD 1200. It is commonly called a jital and was issued by Hindu Rajput rulers in northern India at about the time of the Muslim conquest by the Ghorids of Afghanistan. The coin features a sacred bull on one side and a mounted horseman on the other. Because the coin is so small, only a part of each design shows. Similar coins are catalogued by Robert Tye in his book Jitals as type 33.
