Help ID'ing this Islamic(?) Coin
« on: May 24, 2008, 04:30:54 pm »
Hello Forvm members,
I'd be very appreciative with help attributing this coin.  I apologize for being ignorant as to correct orientation.
Thank you in advance.  Dominicus.

Hi Dominicus

Your coin is a fals of the Zengid Nur al-Din Mahmud bin Zengi (541-569 H/ AD 1146-1174). These are known dated 558, 561 and 564 H (1163, 1166 and 1169 AD), but unfortunately the marginal legend on the reverse is unreadable on yours: all were struck in Damascus.

A reference would be Spengler & Sayles 74

The picture below shows the correct orientation.

Best wishes

Alan

Well, thank you very much!

You are helping me so much.  I've just been passed down several ancient coins and small artifacts from my grandfather.  He was Lebanese.
Some are Roman, other islamics.  I'm trying to figure out what "ties" all the coins.  Well, I just attributed a Dupondius from Tiberius...from Commagene Mint...I wonder if Gramps was focusing on Syria/Armenian province?  I shall continue piecing the puzzle.

This website seems to be a nice resource for Islamic issues:
