An early Septimius S. Portrait
« on: May 02, 2008, 05:31:50 am »
From his first year issue of sesterti - looking younger than usual:

Septimius Severus, Rome mint, 193 AD.,
Æ Sestertius (28-30 mm / 18,93 g),
Obv.: [IM]P CAES L SEPT - SEV P[ERT] AVG , laureate head of Septimius Severus right.
Rev.: FIDEI [LEG TR P COS] / S - C , Fides standing left, holding Victory and standard.
RIC IV, I, 180, 651 (scarce) ; BMC 469 ; Coh 147 corr. ; Hill 36 .

Maybe Curtis can use the information for his data.

regards

Obv. die 33 in my thesis, known with three Fidei Leg rev. dies.  A somewhat unusual portrait, I recognized the die.

Hard to ID the rev. die because of the legend loss, the position of the letters being one of the best distinguishers of dies.

You've piqued my interest.  What is the title/topic of your thesis?

The Roman coinage of the first five years of Septimius Severus' reign, including die studies of the entire gold and bronze coinage, submitted at Oxford in 1972.
