What are Artuk and Butak?
« on: April 29, 2008, 04:03:41 pm »
There is a "headcutter" copper dirham in an upcoming Peus auction catalogued as "Artuk 62; Butak 36; Spengler/Sayles 36."  The figure holding the head is described as the Greek hero Perseus.

I've looked at Spengler/Sayles and they don't mention the Perseus theory.  What are Artuk and Butak?  If anyone has these, do they explain the Perseus theory?  Do these books suggest the heatcutter type is based on a constellation?

Hi Ed

If you look at p.182 in Spengler & Sayles, the second and eighth references are Artuk and Butak, but I'm afraid I don't have either to give you the answer: just to make it more difficult, both are in Turkish :(

Best wishes

Alan
