The Mabbott Collection
« on: April 10, 2008, 02:15:10 pm »
The Mabbott Collection (1969) sale was an important one as far as Roman Provincial coins goes.  There were nearly 4,000 (non-Imperial) coins sold in a multi day event many of which would be of interest to the Provincial collector.  There were coins sold here which do not appear to have been catalogued elsewhere (in large publications at any rate).  Certainly I have discovered 4 coins of particular interest which I could not locate in any other publication.

On this page of my web-site I have started to list all the coins sold in this sale  :o.  I only have a couple of hundred done but as there are a few thousand coins I wonder is there any point - Is it worth the effort of my continuing - It is quite time consuming.  Is it of use / interest?

The descriptions are quite spartan but certainly better than nothing for some areas.  Coin descriptions for Moesian or Thracian mints have certainly moved on a long way since then.

Any thoughts?

I am not encouraged by a huge display of interest in this  :).  The areas of most interest are really in the cities covered later in the sale though.

I think I will put the project on hold for now --

You are probably correct in that there is little interest in a listing of coins from the Mabbott collection.  Those who are truly interested will probably find a way to get the catalog and those who would simply use it as an identification resource, in this day and age, want a picture of the coin before they believe that it is the same as what they have.  Gone are the days when coins mostly were identified, bought and sold simply by written description.  It seems the digital age requires pictures for validation!

Hi Jeff,

Yes, I fully agree.  There are images available for some, of course - -but they are a little dim.

Like the Lindgren collection books (and Mionnet and RG) - I still find it a useful resource even though a bit of effort is required.  Now if someone ambitious wanted to start a "searchable" Mionnet translation and listing that would be useful ............
