10mm VICTORIA AVGGG AE4 - Eugenius?
« on: March 03, 2008, 11:51:12 am »

Could this tiny (9-10mm)"VICTORIA AVGGG" AE4 be a coin of the usurper Eugenius, or is this just wishful thinking?
The small size + crude strike looks rather similar to the Eugenius AE4 coins on Wildwinds, whilst the portrait looks to me as if it might have a beard (though this could just be a combination of crude style and wear); it looks quite different to the VICTORIA AVGGG coins of other emperors like Arcadius in my collection.

The only obverse legend visible is "DN" on the left and the "G" of AVG on the right. The mintmark on the reverse appears to be T*P. Note that the photo makes the coin look rather silvery (due to reflection) - it actually has a fairly even greyish-green patina.

Hi
Also I think that it is Eugenius.
He has the beard as my Eugenius.
You look as they are similar.

Hello. I think your right - i feel about 90% certain you hit a rare coin. Ser feeling that way is a good sign - he has a great eye for LRBC. I think Eugenius is underrated, in that his coins are even scarcer than their already scarce reputation.

Thanks for the help! It looks like my suspicions were correct for once.
If this is a Eugenius, what do you think its value would be? Most of the Eugenius bronzes on coinarchives.com had auction estimates of 50-100 euros, but these were much better examples with larger flans and better strikes.

As to price?
Not too many of these come up on e bay, and since the condition of the obverse is rough, and the flan small, I think it is very hard to say. I don't think it would top 50 USD, and likely go for less.
