Pius denarius out of its capsule with a question
« on: March 04, 2008, 04:35:30 pm »
Freed from its plastic shell, I got a chance to have a look at my alledged Strack 63 (it is not in RIC), but now I saw something that looks like drapery on the far shoulder! Moreover I find the bust showing a lot of Pius' right shoulder.
Any opinions on the drapery and its possible new attribution?

Yes, that's definitely clasp and fold of cloak before neck, fold of cloak behind neck too, a bust variant not recorded in BMC.

Here's a new arrangement of the priestly implements on a similar denarius I acquired recently, with knife on l. and ladle on r. rather than vice versa, perhaps just by engraver's error.

Thank you Curtis!
I already had a hunch it would be rare, as I could not find it in RSC. Should I list it as Strack 63 variant?
Yours is a very interesting variant as well and falls way off the two known series where there are five implements - nice!
