Struggling with this....Claudius?
« on: February 24, 2008, 04:32:25 pm »
I'm having difficulty identifying this one because the reverse is very worn.
The obverse looks like Claudius to me, though  the identifiable letters (CAESAR AVG PM) could also apply to several other first century figures.
The reverse looks like a standing figure (or possibly even seated) and could be holding a patera. Some letters are legible, but I can't match them up to anything in the books or databases.

Any help would be appreciated.

Looks like a Claudius obv. muled with the rev. of an Antonia dupondius.  The coin will be an ancient imitation, not an official product.

Cohen 99 records a similar mule from a private collection, with comment "A bizarre imitation using a reverse of Antonia."

Wow! Thanks Curtis. No wonder I couldn't identify it. I don't think I would have done so in a thousand years. The expertise around here is truly staggering.

I've just realised that the two sides will almost certainly have identical legends - TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG PM TR P IMP - which must be pretty unusual!
