« on: February 21, 2008, 03:38:50 pm »
Hi All;
14-15mm, 1gram coin. Maybe from middle ages, or not. I believe it was found in England. Any help appreciated. Thanks,
Ray

it is also known as a "hardhead", they were issued 1555-1560.

it contains about 10% silver. they were valued at three halfpence scotts, and were equal in value to the french denier.

not of great value, but of imense historic value.

The coin carries the monogram FM, which appeared on her coinage after her husband, the Dauphin, became Francis II of France, on 10th July 1559. Francis died in 1560, so this was issued within that period.

Hi Robert_Brenchley;
Thank-you for the added provenance. The people on this board amaze me at the range of coin knowledge they contain.

In my case it's not knowledge, unless you count knowledge of where to look on the shelf over my head for a couple of small references for Scottish coinage!

Hi Robert_Brenchley;
LOL, That book could have fell off that shelf and hit me in the head and I still would have been lost (and also now, a headache) :'(  ;D ;D. Later,
