Claudius ?
« on: February 17, 2008, 02:10:45 am »
Hi all,

Another from a lot of "museum cleaned" coins from a popular auction site.

I have this as:
Claudius II, RIC 0186 Claudius II Gothicus AE Antoninianus. IMP CLAVDIVS AVG, radiate bust right / PAX AVG, Pax advancing left with scepter and branch. Siscia mint.

Tho the portrait dosnt look right and there is a II mark in left field. Can anyone confirm/deny my attrib.?

Thanks,
Justin

Looks mostly correct... Siscia has quite distinctive bust types compared to the other mints that struck for Claudius II.  The only correction I'd make is that the bust is radiate and cuirassed.  I'd just describe it is RIC 186var as RIC catalogues examples with no mintmark, or S or II in the right field.
