Big Imperials - they can also be so nice ...
« on: February 11, 2008, 05:15:23 pm »
The title is similar to another title of a fine thread of this board.
Althogh the small provincials can be very nice i must confess they are not the real focus of my collecting activities.

So i try to start this one.
Maybe we can see some good material here.

Let me begin with a Titus:

Rome mint, 80 AD.,
Æ Sestertius (33-35 mm / 27,94 g),
Obv.: IMP T CAES VESP AVG P M TR P P P COS VIII , laureate head of Titus right (fine, elaborate portrait).
Rev.: FELICIT PVBLIC / S - C , Felicitas standing left, holding scepter and cornucopiae.
old RIC II # 89 (new RIC II # 143) ; Coh. 74 ; BMC 158 .

A little worn but one of my favorites:

LAVREL COMMODVS AVG GERM SARM
Laureate, draped, cuirassed, right
IVNONI SOSPITAE TRP II IMP II COS PP / SC
Juno Sospita with spear and shield advancing right, snake before
RIC 1583, RCV 5762, BMC 1669
25.8 g
Last appearance of Juno Sospita on Rome coinage. Commodus was born in Lanuvium, the site of a major temple and cult image of the goddess.

Arminius,

FWIW, the new RIC II number for your coin is 143.

Lovely coin by the way.

Arminius, I suspect you have started a very long thread!

Try this one for size:

Antoninus Pius, Sestertius
Laureate head right. "ANTONINVS AVG. PIVS P.P. TR. P. XV"
Fortuna standing right holding rudder on globe and out-turned cornucopiae. "SC" around. "COS. IIII"
RIC 885, 29.6 gms, 33.2 mm

Sestertius struck in Rome in 231 AD
IMP SEV ALEXANDER AVG, Laureate bust of Severus Alexander right
IOVI CONSERVATORI, Jupiter standing left, holding thunderbolt and sceptre, with a small figure of the emperor at his feet, SC in field
14.75 gr

Domitian, Rome mint, struck 85 AD.,
Æ Sestertius (34-35 mm / 23,62 g),
Obv.: IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM COS XI CENS POT P P , laureate head of Domitian right, aegis at neck.
Rev.: S C , Domitian on horseback right, holding shield, about to spear fallen German warrior. The German warrior is fallen back on his left knee, fighting with a sword. Both holding long hexangular shields.
RIC II 284 ; BMC 339 ; Coh. 484 .

This type is one of a series struck to celebrate the extension of the Roman frontier on the Rhine and Main in Hesse, the area of the Chatti. While this celebrates Domitian's "victories" over the Germans, it wasn't until the reign of Trajan that victory was actually obtained.

Some say this is the first bronze sestertius - for others others it´s just a big provincial coin from Asia,
anyway RIC lists the coin and here it is:

Sestertius / Diobol , 35-37 mm, Ephesos (Pergamon?) mint about 25 BC
Av.: [AVG]VSTV{S] , bare head of Augustus r.
Rv.: CA in dotted circle, all in laurel wreath
RPC 2233 ; RIC 501 ; BMC 713-20 ; C 791 ; AMC 698 .

For all who like pretty (faces / women):

Gaius (called Caligula) in the name of Agrippina Senior, wife of Germanicus, mother of Gaius, Rome mint, 37-41 AD.,
Æ Sestertius (35-36 mm / 27,74 g),
Obv.: AGRIPPINA M F MAT C CAESARISAV[GV]STI , draped bust of Agrippina right, wearing hair in long plait.
Rev.: S P Q R / MEMORIAE / AGRIPPINAE , carpentum drawn by two mules left; the cover supported by standing figures at the corners, ornamented sides.
RIC I 55 (Gaius) ; BMC 159, 85 (Caligula) ; Coh. 1 ; CBN 128 (Gaius) .

rgds
