Not a bad coin at all, Martin. You can still see most all of the detail and a lot of silvering is still intact.  In rarity, ok... but in ugliness, no way. I'd say this Probus deserves better than this thread!

I'm still wondering if my Tiberius (above) was cleaned with a sandblaster, suffering from exposure to kryptonite, or maybe was resurrected from the charred remains of a thermo-nuclear explosion. ;)

Regards,
Danny

Fortunately our friend Heracles has survived in a not too bad shape:

Heracleia Pontica in Bithynia, Gordian III., 238-244 AD.,
Æ 36 (34-36 mm / 18,96 g),
Obv.: [M AN]T ΓOPΔIANOC AY[Γ] , laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Gordian right, seen from behind.
Rev.: [H]PAKΛEAC MA-TP-OC AΠO[IKΩN ΠOΛIΩN?] , Herakles, nude, standing right, head left, his left holding club and lion´s skin, dragging Kerberos.
BMC - ; cp. SNG Von Aulock 452 (same rev. type) ; cp. Waddington, Rec. Gen. 378, 218-9 (rev. legend) .

I received this one on Christmas eve ( a nice little surprise!) and was quite taken with it. The dealer's pic indicated it was a bit rough, but well centered with a decent portrait. In hand the coin is actually much better! Hardly any roughness at all and condition wise I would rate it VF.

Titus as Caesar, denarius
RIC V1563 (C), BMC V521, RSC 395
Antioch mint, 72-73 AD
Obv - T CAES IMP VESP PON TR POT; Bust of Titus, laureate, bearded, draped, r.
Rev - No legend; Titus stg. r. with branch and sceptre, in quadriga r.

I often ask myself  what this corroded Altar II Sestertius looked like before 'cleaning'. I will never know.

Hi Rugser!

Nice to hear from you!

And my new coin for this thread:

Thrace, Hadrianopolis, Commodus, AD 177-192
AE 16, 3.2g
obv. [AV KL AVR] - KOMO[DOC]
Bust, draped and cuirassed, laureate, r.
rev. A - DR - I - APO(sic!) / POLEIT
Emperor, in heroic pose, nude except chlamys flowing behind, galopping on horse r., holding briddle in l. hand and spear
       in raised r. hand.
ref. Jurukova 160; Varbanov (engl.) 3249
rare, F/about VF

A neat rev. for 16mm, look at the details of the horse's head. The portrait looks like Severus but it is clearly KOM.

Best regards

That's a pretty cool one Jochen. And yes: that sure does look like Severus! I am guessing that it is the well placed bits of corrosion causing the effect.

Thanks Dave.  Actually Curtis just pointed out that it isn't the common IVDEA but rather the rare IVDAEA

Well, this one I sold some time ago.  In fact, I sold it because of the same reasons I am posting it in this thread...although it is rare, it has condition issues...

Balbinus AE 36, SNG Paris 1627 (same dies)

Best, Noah

Please don't let this topic die as it is a great advertisement for ancient coin collecting. I like the saying "that it is about the coin and the history not the condition of the coin". While having coins in EF condition is nice, for many of us this level of quality is unaffordable so the samples in poor condition allow us to have an example for our collections.

That's the spirit of the thread!
Not just cheap junk but junky examples of coins someone wants to have but can't afford in better condition.
It doesn't get much junkier than a pierced and broken plated denarius.
