Here are two of my rarish but not-so-pretty coins.  These were both from a lot of 20 silver coins that included a few that were somewhat bashed about, but interesting.   The first is a denarius of Q. Pomponius Musa showing the muse Clio; the second is an antoninianus of Aemilian.

Have had this coin for over 20 years now; not a beauty, yet it pleases me to look at.

Mauseus, I've never seen the Carasius "three brothers" coin with a spear over the shoulder, is there a nice example some where online? i'd really like to see that.

Hi Roma,

Here's a clearer "three brothers" with the spear over shoulder, again a COMES AVGGG example with the marks S/P//C. This one is in the BM collection.

Regards,

Mauseus

I hate this narrow dies, flat strike and rough surface:

Commodus, Rome mint, 178 AD.,
Æ Sestertius (26-28 mm / 18,58 g),
Obv.: L AVREL COMM - ODVS AVG TR P III , laureate head of Commodus right.
Rev.: [VOTA PVBLICA IMP] II CO[S P P] / S C , Commodus standing left sacrificing over tripod, to left victimarius about to kill a bull.
RIC III 341, 1594 (M.Aurelius) ;  Coh. 979 ; BMC 1688 .

Still attractive or not?

Still well enough preserved to show a good die with a vivid scene of sacrifice!  Fabric as you say.  Pat L.

This they are two denarii of my collection more has been damaged  in ground from much time; nevertheless they is perfectly identified.

#1- C.Considius Paetus (c. BC 46)
RSC Considia 6; BMC 4087; Syd. 992; Craw. 465/3

#2- L.Plautius Plancus (c. BC 47)
RSC Plautia 14; BMC 4009; Syd. 959b; Craw. 453/1c.

I wonder me : which chemical-physical phenomenon has she damaged them ?

Mercury compounds and complexing agents (eg. some of the salts in fertilizers or liquid manure) are able to dissolve metallic silver in soils.

Worn and I would love to own a better example, so I think this coin qualifies for this thread:

Aquilia Severa, Dupondius, Rome, AD 221
Av: IVLIA AQVILIA SEVERA AVG, draped bust without diadem right
Rv: CONCORDIA  S C, Concordia with double cornucopiae sacrificing over lighted altar
8,03 g, 24,9-26,0 mm, die axis 5h
RIC IV/2 Elagabal 393/394

I'm not 100% sure about the attribution, but with female bust and double cornucopiae it's the only match I could find.

Regards, Stefan

Very interesting additions!  The Plautius Plancus is one of my favorites!

I thought I'd add one of my later coins to the mix.  Julian II "the apostate"

DN FL CL IVLI ANVS PF AVG

SPES REIPVBLICE
Emperor standing left holding globe and spear
SMK
Cyzicus mint
355-360 AD

Ric VIII Cyzicus 124

rated as rare

It looks a little bit better in hand but definately belongs in this thread.  I can't seem to find a better example either.

Is that a barbarous portrait?

Is that a barbarous portrait?

Never entered my mind that it was, all the legends are clear in hand.  I haven't been able to find a decent example to compare it though....now you have me thinking...

Hi Titus
I think that your IVLIANVS is original mint Cyzicus.... the engraver perhaps semi-barbaric.
Here is my example Cyzicus 124.. it is not better than yours... but it seems gone out of the same dies.

Best regards

I have two coins to add that I would have liked in better condition.

Caracalla (I think) from Pessius, not such a common city
and a quinar of Marc Anthony and Lepidus. The latter is at least cute in a way but the other...

This coin is in a terrible state of preservation, and most people would not even look twice at it (which is fine with me!), but it is unlisted in RIC for the short obverse legend, and should follow RIC VII Siscia 55, which has the long obverse legend beginning with IMP.

A.D. 318-19
21x20mm    2.6gm
CONSTANTI-NVS AVG high crested helmet, cuir., spear across right shoulder.
VICTORIAE LAETAE PRINC PERP [ Joyous (well-earned) victory to the eternal Prince] two Victories stg., facing one another, together holding shield inscribed VOT PR [VOTA POPULI ROMANI (vows of the Roman people)]on altar.

Well Here's another for the pile of too ugly to keep but too rare to get rid of.This little Aurelian has seen better days but what it lacks in appearance it makes up for in rarity.

Aurelian 271/272 1st emission 2nd phase
Obv- IMP AVRELIANVS AVG -Radiate bust right, cuirassed as seen from behind
Rev- RESTITVT ORIGENTIS(sic)-Emperor receiving wreath from woman
EX- backwards  :Greek_epsilon: dolphin
Mint-Unknown Balkan mint

Estiot sites only 20 dolphin Exergues total from all officina and only 1 for Epsilon(not backwards) at Oxford.Furthermore this bust type Estiot B9 is unknown for this reverse type and only listed 2 other times  for dolphin exergues.Once on a Concordia Militvm rev type Jacquier collection and once for a Virtvs Militvm at Vienne.

I once bought a lot of halved coins and some of them had been struck 3 times before
they managed to halve them. So it probably wasn't that easy to do.
