ID help on Delmatius?
« on: December 10, 2007, 12:38:07 am »
Hi;
Obv. FL DELM[A][T][V]NOBC/Rev. GLOR-[E][X][E][R][C]-ITVS. SMAN[?] IN Ex. The bust looks more like Constans than Delmatius but I am pretty sure of first five letters in obv. legend. What am I missing?

RIC VII (Antioch) 112 cites S, Z, Θ, I as the attested officinae.  I'd lean to S on yours, but it is far from clear.

The obv legend should break DELMA-TIVS

Hi Steve;
       Another great ID help, and right on point as usual. With coin in hand, it is no-doubt an S in ex.
 A quick follow-up question, if you don't mind. I noticed there were not many coins listed in the WW database for Delmatius. Are his coins rare? Thanks again!
Regards,
Ray

well your coin is listed as r5, and i have another one of these, RIC VII Thessalonica 227, which is also listed r5.  So I'm guessing they are not quite as rare as they once were....

Hi AdonisRock;
Well r5 is petty good in my book!, but I know what you mean. Since the metal detectors came in to use, a lot of the old rares are now common due to the new hoard finds. This is my only Delmatius so I'm happy! :) (doing happy dance as we speak) Thanks for your input.
