I have added five denarii of Caracalla and, at least for now, am done with my Severan silver (I still have 5 or 6 tets to attrib and photo and post, etc, but I am still working on a couple of them and will do them all when I am done). I think I am going to switch over to bronze for now...now on to photographing!

Thanks Dino, it's getting there anyway. What is really amazing is the hundreds (literally) of coins that I still need to attrib/photo etc...lol...I get in the cleaning/obsessevie collecting mode more often than the attribing... ::)

Looks like me and Jochen are have dueling provicincial uploads today! lol...So, this will be slower for me, but here are my first five bronze in the new "Severan Wing - Bronze" gallery. Three Caracalla's, one Geta and one Septimius Severus. I particularly like the Sept. Sev., it looks nice and actually feels nice (smooth as silk and heavy) in hand! Enjoy, I've got more...

Thank you, Noah. I appreciate. Well, since it's a long weekend, I went ahead and did five more tonight; two Septimius Severus (Hercules strangling Namean lion and an Apollo Sauroktonos) , two Geta (lion and a Victory advancing left), and one Diadumenian (Artemis). Enjoy.

Evening...added 6 new ones the the Severan - bronze wing tonight, two Sept. Sev. (an eagle and a bunch of grapes), two Caracalla's (a nifty Nicaea standards and a worn but good looking none the less Hercules wrestling the giant Antaeus), a worn and odd looking Macrinus (liberalitis) and a nice Julia Domna (hermes) from Philippopolis. More to follow. (I am actually starting to be able to discern the blobs without a ton of trouble now! I might actually be getting the hang of this!)

Evening all! I added five more Severan bronze tonight: two little Sept. Sev. (one cresent/star, one dionysis), two big Elegabalus (one the Great God of Oddessos and one eagle) and one unlisted Caracalla (Stobi, Nike reverse). Enjoy. More to come.

Evening all, benn sort of lax and the coins keep mounting up...so tonight I have added four new coins (and made a new gallery "Severan Wing - Enemies"). For your viewing pleasure I present: one Sept. Sev. (naked jupiter over two children, I already had one with this reverse (and much prettier for that matter, FORVM purchase of course :) , but this is a second issue with that reverse, 210 A.D. and has the BRIT obverse), one very pretty Julia Mamaea (Vesta reverse, great flan and well struck), one nifty and large for the type flanned Clodius Albinus (he is my first entry in the Severan Wing - Enemies...I plan on putting a Parthian of the era and the rest of the Roman's etc...that's the plan anyway), and then I went WAY off the theme of late by adding a Julius Caesar denarius (bust of Venus obverse) just for flavor. Enjoy...more to come. (back to the provincials...I think the next round will be dedicated to eastern mint Severan tets)

Afternoon all. I figured while I was on a roll, I'd do all of my Severan tets (well, all of them for now!). There are 4 Elegabalus from antioch (eagle w/star between legs reverse), one Caracalla (also from antioch, eagle standing on dead animal...I personally don't see the dead animal, but the people that are smarter than me say that it is so!) and a nifty Diadumenian (another eagle, but this time from Aelia Capitolina (Jerusalem) and according to Michel Prieur, is only the second known example! This just goes to show that even a blind squirrel somtimes comes away with the nut!). Enjoy...more to come. (back to bronze now)

Thanks Johnny! I really appreciate. With you and me on pretty similar economic footing, I knew you would appreciate the effort that goes in to making a half way decent collection on a fairly limited budget!

Sorry, work has been killing me and I have been slacking. I have several coins photo'd, but have not had time to attrib, so I am just adding a single coin for now: a really cool, albiet moderatly worn, alexandrian tet of Severus Alexander with an Athena in attic helm reverse...just recieved in the mail from Joe yesterday. I have to say that it has shot up to near the top of my "favorite coins in my collection". I hope you enjoy, more to come!

Ok, I am still slacking, but I just recieved my latest Forvm addition: a nifty denarius of Julia Paula, Elagabalus' first wife. I've got a line on wife #2 (the not so virtueous Vestal Virgin, Aquilia Severa ;) ), but his third and final spouse may end up being an expensive chore to find! Ah well...Severus Alexander's wife is no cheaper...lol. Check out the reverse on the Julai Paula. It's a seated Concordia, but Concordia is all laid back.  ;D

Enjoy, more to come...

Evening all, I have an overabundance of provincials to identify and was getting overwhelmed, so today I treated myself to two imperials, a sestertius of Severus Alexander (good looking obverse, too bad the reverse is worn, it is a pretty neat one!) and a denarius of Julia Maesa (one more of my Severan ladies down! She was the grandmother of both Severus Alexander and Elagabalus and must have had somthing going for her to deserve her own coinage at such levels!). I think I may take a break on Severans for a little while (all I have left is provincials to attrib) and go with a few of my better oddballs next time.

Enjoy,
Chris

Morning everyone!

As I stated last night, I am going to knock out some of my non-Severan coinage, so today I offer: one Hadrian Ses (hilitaris reverse), one nifty silvered Carinus (Mercury reverse, most of the silvering is intact and it was a great strike!) , one Trajan den that I rescued from a lump of blackness, one Constantius I votive (an impulse buy as most of my non-Severan are! nice reverse, Carthage mint), and one ex Vel Garnett Constantius II fel temp (soldier leading captive from hut). It's a start anyway!

Enjoy, many more to come!

the two silvers are not (got those in my first ever lot of coins, all low grade silver, although the gordian iii ant in my gallery was pretty nice and came with the rest, I still have two islamic coins to id from that lot as well! lol that was from a couple years ago! man I slack!!!), the Thrax w tuna reverse was not either...let me look real quick at the rest...ok, the rest, except for the Diadumenium with the "river god giving the finger" reverse were.

Chris

Edit- as a matter of fact, I bought the Thrax from a local dealer who had it marked as Severus Alexander...20 bucks!

I just added 4 more Severan bronze (2 caracalla, one of which is really pretty! One Elagabalus that is eaten up but has a nice pedigree, and one nice Macrinus. I am slowly chipping away at the pile! Enjoy.

All right, I think I am done for the day. I just added (from the collection of John Richards) a pair of denarii, both from Laodicea (Julia Domna and Caracalla).

Just added 4 more to a newly created section in my gallery: Non-roman, Autonomous. Included are a Mithradates II (parthian), Koinon of Macedon (autonomous Macedonian, around mid 3rd cent AD), , revised posthumous Philip tet from Antioch (granddaddy of the tetradrachm that were so popular in Antioch), and a Celtic, Danube Region, Imitating Thasos AR tet (must have been close to original dies, this example is not nearly as "stylized" as the later strikes).

I am about 1/3 of the way done with attributing the ones I have photographed, then I start taking pictures again! Wish me luck.
