Greek Coin - Confirmation of attribution
« on: November 03, 2007, 06:03:25 pm »
The top coin is mine.  The one below is an example of what I think it might be from Wildwinds described as follows:

Moushmov 5971 Macedonia, Amphipolis Æ18. Laureate head of Zeus right / AMFIPO-LEITWN, eagle standing right on thunderbolt, head left. SNGCop 74

It was in a group of uncleaneds  They've all been from the Macedon area.

Is the attribution correct?

I'm definately not an expert in these,  but IMHO I don't think your reverse is a match

looking at the area of the eagle whee the legs are on the thunderbolt, and the left wing, and also  the lettering on the right of the eagle

I've looked at the reverse again.  I'm positive that the lettering to the left of the eagle says "LITON" (With the O being an Omega).  To the right of the eagle I can makeout an "A" very clearly.  I think I see am "M" and a PHI" too, but those lare less clear.  I don't know what it could say other than Amphipolis.

Perhaps it's just an earlier or later issue, using a slightly different die, or perhaps it is the same just far more worn and corroded.
