constantinusmaxavg campgate help with bust, and reverse items
« on: November 03, 2007, 05:55:39 pm »
Currently cleaning this coin,  and I came across a brain dump  while tring to ID  the bust type ....

Also,  and this may seem like a weird questions,  but there is a third dot  (  The one Above the star)

Also,  and while I'm at it,  the star looks more like ,  well... like victory standing on globe ..... die break ?

EDITED   forgot the coin info

AE 18-21 mm  2.8 grams

OBV :: CONSTANTI-NVS MAX AVG

REV  :: PROVIDENTIAE AVGG, Campgate with no door,  11 rows of blocks ,  2 turrets,  and a star ?  above

EX  SMANT :Greek_epsilon:

cheers

EDITED  second time  added a close up  through microscope  of star  and dot

Helvetica's RIC lists list it as
Constantine I
CONSTANTI-NVS MAX AVG
Rosette diadem, draped, cuirassed
PROVIDEN-TIAE AVGG
SMANT epsilon
RIC VII Antioch 84
R4

I think the extra dot above the campgate is from a double strike; its part of the original dotted rim. The messed up star is probably from the same cause.

Thanks Sid,

I was not sure if it was draped, or draped and cuirassed

and I needed a second opinion  on the reverse oddities

thanks again

cheers

I concur with the ID, but the double strike theory is not what I was thinking.

The way the dotted rim appears to "bend" out at this point looks more like an engraving error, and one that someone has started to look at resolving, but decided to leave as is.
