Now You Google It, Now You Don't

This morning I find that 2 of the 3 Google Books fascicles of Waddington's RG are no longer accessible via any browser, and that Google Books no longer recognizes the ISBN (0543951731) that once led to the Elibron version of Mionnet's Description des Medailles vol. 2.  If you need numismatic materials now on Google Books, you should probably download them pronto.

Edit: RG fascicles and Mionnet's vol. 2 are downloadable now via
http://people.virginia.edu/~jdk3t/RG/ and

I have been downloading them as they become available (at least the titles that interest me).

Out of curiousity, what are the rules of "re-publishing" the google and/or MSN scanned works?  While certainly a resource hog and I would not want them hosted via my servers, I could put together a DVD with all of the works, but is this "legal"?

Before talking about legal issues I'd like to mention the ethical one.  Google *asks* that you use the files for non-commercial purposes, and that you maintain attribution.

Google probably can't force you to do these things, because they didn't create a new copyright nor did you sign an agreement with them.

The MSN scanned works mostly come from Archive.org and lack such requests.

Legally, if the book is in public domain it doesn't matter who scanned it unless the scan somehow made changes.  For example, Google might own the copyright on the three pages they add at the beginning.  I know how to remove those pages but most people do not.

Some people are already making commercial use of archive.org books.  For example, Obscure Press is selling the 1913 Numismatic Chronicle for $32.
http://www.amazon.ca/Numismatic-Chronicle-Journal-Royal-Society/dp/1846644380/

The Product Description on Amazon was written by me!  I wrote it as a mini-review of the volume when it showed up a few years ago on Archive.org!

http://www.archive.org/details/TheNumismaticChronicleAndJournalVolXIII

You are thus probably free to make your own DVD-ROMs of the books.  I started doing this, by making HTML tables of contents for some important multi-volume works like Eckhel, but I got distracted and didn't finish it.

Hi,

In the UK I believe that copyright is such that although the material within the scanned book is public domain the method of presentation, the scanned file, remains the intellectual property right of the organisation that did the scanning. Thus Google could lay claim to "owning" the pdf file of the work in question.

Mauseus

More links have been added to the list.

Including:

Andrew McCabe's Books on Roman Republican Coins - "This website is a personal view on my Roman Republican coin books. I'm not a book collector despite what the website might suggest, I'm only interested in the coins. My comments are completely subjective and are based on how useful I view the book as a student."

and

Phil Davis' website on imitation Republican denarii of Dacia - "I've been a serious collector of Roman Republican denarii for some 25 years. (Well, I think I'm serious anyway; if others disagree, I won't insist.) While my interest in the "official" coins of the Roman State hasn't waned, more recently I've been focused on imitations of Republican denarii made by various "barbarous" peoples beyond the political control of Rome, but to a greater or lesser degree within her economic sphere of interest."

Lee,

I started collecting ancients recently and this article on grading and quality of ancients was particularly useful to me. Robert Kokotailo of Calgary Coin authored the article. Find below the link.

I just realized my error.  Ruzicka is available for download in its original German.  An English version would be quite useful.

From John Isles, Moneta-L, who got it from AWOL - The Ancient World Online.  The link was clickable on Moneta-L, but unfortunately not in my copy of the message below!

Revue Numismatique (47 Issues, 1698 Articles 1958-2004)
The fields covered by the Revue Numismatique include numismatics and monetary history, as well as archeology, economic history, art history, and also epigraphy, sigillography and glyptics as far as they relate to the study of coins, medals and money-like documents

Very nice job. I checked out your site today and found several links I wasn't aware of. I spent a couple hours perusing your compilation. Thanks for the hard work. Very informative.

I found the default to order of addition made it hard to find if a page was listed (couldn't find mine).  The site must require cookies to allow change to alphabetical but no warning is shown.   Still, I found a lot of sites unknown to me and tank you for the effort.

Neither could I, Doug. For some reason I must have missed it or lost it. It's not as if I didn't know about it! Sorry about that.

Now it's there. An excellent reference site. Thanks for your efforts  :) BTW, I did find some of the text on the home page difficult to read when set directly against the coins background.

Best wishes

Don't be surprised if you don't get an answer to the 10 identical posts you made on this forum.
If you have a specific question you will find helpful people here to answer you but this sounds like you're
mommy to read you a fairytale. ;)

What have you read so far? If people don't know what you know they can't recommend new
books to you.

It looks as if delicious may be sold or otherwise "transferred".  Yahoo has determined that it was not a good "fit" and there is a lot of speculation as to what will happen.

In either case, I suggest you back up your data.

Best,
