The ebay seller numis-rares has come up in coversation a few times and I believe that he should be added to the fake sellers list. The following is just the latest example of his activities.

The top coin is currently being offered as genuine on ebay for Eur 755, the bottom coin is a replica being sold as such at the moment on ebay for $28.99. This is quite a markup for a bit of repatination.

A larger image can be seen in the fake reports (just click on the picture in the fake report).

This sort of thing will not fool most but the coins from this guy do obtain high prices from some folks who seem to have plenty of money to throw away on these things!

Regards,
Martin

Here is another example of his handy-work.

This time include a bit or artificial wear and then repatinate. The try and sell for Eur 650.

Someone paid over Eur 855 for this known fake after a frenzied bidding battle. The repatination and dirt encrustations have been skillfully applied.

A Lucilla medallion anyone? The reipe is quite simple, buy a replica, apply some selective wear, repatinate and then add dirt encrustations. This will take you up to Eur 660!

Why are all those replicas/reproductions not marked as such in the first place?  (Surely one explanation is that they are being produced with the knowledge that this may well happen anyway?)  Whilst we can't stop crooks from buying repros and making them look older, surely we could put pressure on the actual manufacturer, if we can trace them, to mark the reproductions in the first place?  They may not be averse to the idea, and even just stamping the edge may deter some crooks from this type of fraud.

These reproductions are marked on their edge with the word "COPY", which is then removed by the fakester.

I will stop there but have uploaded all these coins and many more by this seller to the fake reports. I know that the experienced folks out there would not be fooled by these but there are obviously less-experienced people have have spent thousands of Euros on these and have obviously been taken in by them.

Martin

Wow, the internet is truly unbelievable. The fact that he would be so blatent about it and list them all at once like this... it's like he has not the slightest fear of legal ramifications... probably because he knows nothing will happen to him, and for good reason, at worse ebay will close his account! Scary stuff!  There needs to be some entity created that can get through the jurisdictional bs and go after these guys. This is a lot of money were talking about here.
Gee, I'd only have to pay the small fee of $1,040 dollars to have him repatinate the first replica you posted about >:( The saps that have purchased these coins, if they dont already know, are going to be extremely pissed the day they try and move these at a reputable auction house.

Though these exceptional coins are far out from my range, I am quite worried.
Probably, the same producer makes high-qualty copies of more common coins.
Do you remember that  auctions of  crisp setstertii with the same beautiful
but artificial patina? I can imagine that buyers are not complete idiots and learn
something about their aquisitions...
As a corollary, these fakes, in increasing numbers, will circulate in the market perpetually...
It seems that some actions are needed because the turnover of the crook is dozens
of thousands euros.  He sells quite a lot of genuine low end coins I am sure that some members
know his identity. Just a call from police could be a remedy.

I wonder why people is indifferent in this case: it concerns the whole community.

How long do we think it will be before numis-rares reworks this coins a places it back on the market? He bought it 3 days ago on ebay as a reproduction:-

The coin is clearly stamped as a copy but it will be ineteresting to see the treatment the coin gets before being placed back on the market. I shall be keeping my eyes open for it and if/when it returns I will post it for comparison.

Martin

I certainly hope so.
If he had any sense he would be buying the repros with a different account.

Let's hope he doesn't read this and then change his expected course of action.
