Need help Late roman
« on: September 23, 2007, 07:16:10 pm »
I'm trying to figure this one out on my own.  What is messing me up are the letters I can read.  It appears to be (starting from 12 o'clock) "AGLIAN"
Rev. appears to be "TEM" or "TEV" and what I believe is Laetitia.

Problem is I'm into republic and 1st century Romans and this one is a little late for me. I don't recognize the portrat and I only have SEAR millenium volume 1 and Van Meter so I'm a little stuck.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?  Thanks!

Could the "G" be an "E"?  In that case it could be Aurelianus.  But in hand it looks clearly like a "G"

I think the reverse is FELICITTEMP, which would make it RIC V-1, 327 Cyzicus according to Danes amazing spreadsheets.

Thanks.  That's a great resource but I don't see any FELICIT TEMP Rev.
Wildwinds has no image for this coin either.

Open the sheet, click on the tab that says Others, then on the filters at the top click on the Reverse filter, and there you have it, FELICIT TEMP  ;D

Göbl too assigns the coin to Cyzicus, no. 293e, pl. 125, legends IMP C DOM AVRELIANVS AVG / FELICIT TEMP.  There should be pellets under the bust, invisible on your specimen, designating the officina number.

There it is!  Found another example on-line.  It appears to be pretty scarce.  Thank you guys

I've had this coin for probably 2 years and haven't been able to attribute it.  Finally decided to try it today.  That "E" looks like a "G" both in hand, under microscope and resized digitally.
