Pakistani Silver Maybe?
« on: September 23, 2007, 01:21:02 am »
Hi again another piece from the same group, this even looks like it could be real, but it does not look worn a lot.  It looks like a throne on one side and I am not sure about the other.  The size is 16 mm and weight is 3.2 grams all and any help appreciated.

Thanks
Pete

Maybe this one:

Shahi Kings of Kabul and Gandhara, Samanta Deva, c. 850 - 970 A.D.
Silver drachm, Mitchiner ACW 1585 - 1588, Mitchiner NI 117 -120,  obverse mounted horseman right, standard in right; reverse Brahimi, "Sri Samanta Devah", humped bull seated left.

The bull, the right, image has to be rotated 90 degrees clockwise and the horseman, the left side, has to be rotated 180 degrees.  The bull is the obverse side.  This is listed in Tye's book on Jitals as number 14, most likely minted at Ohind.  It says Samanta Deva on the bull side.  This is not a personal name, but a title meaning feudatory chief.  Type gives the dates that these coins were issued between 850-1000 AD.
