Hi Epmunt

It is a kran of Nasir ed-Din Shah of Persia, 1264-1313 H/ 1848-1896 AD, struck in Tabaristan. Unfortunately I can only see one digit of the date, a  7.

Best wishes

Alan

I found it interesting how in this months Celator, the editor has baned the quoting of Wikipedia as a reliable source for facts.  It is probably ok for the vast, vast majority of items but as it is an ever changing medium, subject to ongoing, and reasonably casual, alteration,  it has, I believe, been deemed unsuitable for general acedemia.

Hi Malcolm,

Do you have better, easier sources about Nasir ed-Din Shah of Persia? For my level Wiki is more than good enough.

" baned"   " acedemia "  that is reasonably casual.

wiki is wicked, i think, and i mean that in a good way... you have to sort out about 25% garbage at wiki, versus having to sort 75% garbage out of corporate media.  Here is a very interesting biyt of info from wikimedia: some honorary british knights:

Billy Graham - KBE (2001)

Bill Gates - KBE (2004)

General Colin Powell - KCB (1993)

General Dwight D. Eisenhower - GCB (1945), OM (1945)

Head of CIA #1 William Donovan - KBE

General Wesley Clark - KBE (2000)

General Omar Bradley - KCB

Rudolph W. Giuliani - KBE (2002)

Alan Greenspan - KBE (2002)

George H. W. Bush - GCB (1993)

Ronald Reagan - GCB (1989)

J. Edgar Hoover - KBE (1950)

General Norman Schwarzkopf, Jr. - KCB (1993)

Hi epmunt

No I don't have a better source as it is not an area that I am interested in.  As I said, Wikipedia is "ok for the vast, vast majority of items " and I was just passing on what a well respected nusmismatic periodical said in it's editorial.

Hi Friends,

If there is any thing wrong/garbage about the Nasser al-Din Shah Qajar from Wikipedia, please point out directly.  I would really like to learn how Wiki is wicked in this article:

Of course its ridiculous to cite Wikipedia in a scholarly journal. But, that doesn't mean its a useless or even an innacurate tool. Personally, ever time I need to look something up, I turn first to wikipedia for a general outline. That way, I can at least know what to look for in the more reputable sources. I also recall reading  a study that found that, while wikipedia did have on average a few more minor errors than Encyclopedia Britannica, Britannica had more major errors. (I know, its pathetic that I can't cite my sources  ;D)

I guess what I'm saying is that there should be a middle ground. I know people who are vehemently anti-wikipedia and assume that every scrap of information there is absolute garbage. I also know people who swear by it and use it constantly. Can't we just agree that its a useful tool, but not the only one?

Everything has its errors, but wikipedia appears to have no more than anything else. It's not acceptable to academia because it's not peer-reviewed.
