2 Greek AE's
« on: May 25, 2007, 05:38:30 pm »
Well, this board has taught me to succesfully identify late bronze coins, has taught me to identify earlier bronze coins with some accuracy, and has even given me some incite into how to find provincial coins. Now, I have another problem. Greek coins. These little beauties were purchased from FORVM's very own areich ::doffs hat::.

Where do I start to look for these? I tried wildwinds, but without a general idea of where to start, its pretty much like looking for a needle in a haystack.

1. Macedonian ?
obv - shield w/ possible bird on boss
    rev - helmet w/ 'S' ?

2. obv -  Female bust, Athena?
rev - colum/phallus/torch? encircled by wreath

The first is the Macedonian shield type with thunderbolt as episema, probably minted under Alexander the Great. Second: It seems to have a typical Lydian habit, cf. some Sardeis and Kaystrianoi types. But I'm unable to figureout anything on the reverse. The picture is slightly blurred; possibly you can make a better scan?

Thanks! I've got the Alexander one ID'ed. Its an anonymous half unit, minted in either Pella or Amphipolis in 334 BC. The wildwinds entry gives it a reference of SNGCop 1120. Whats that? I'm still working on the other one.
