Antoninianus - GALLIENUS?
« on: April 05, 2007, 09:28:37 pm »
Hi all!

Just received this today... and am trying to attribute it. I haven't been able to find it... I THINK the legend reads [IMP] GALLIENVS PF AV...(all I can read, maybe AVG GERM?)

The reverse figure seems to have a torch and be holding maybe grain. I can't find this one on Wildwinds... and the obverse legend seems to be "out of place" with other issues. Maybe a barbaric imitation?

Any help appreciated!

IMP GALLIENVS PF AVG GERM is a valid obv legend. Can you propose a legend for the reverse? My eyes are tired tonight, grin.

Thank you, Curtis.

Dave, it looks like your coin is:

Gallienus, Joint Reign, AD 257-8, Rome mint, AE antoniniani
Obv: Radiate head r.; IMP GALLIENVS PF AVG GERM.
Rev: Providentia stg. l., holding baton and cornucopeia; at foot, a globe; PROVIDENTIA AVGG
RIC V-1, 160, C.892. Common.

Thanks, Curtis and Mike!

That is what I thought it might be - Rome RIC160. (At about midnight last night!!!)
The cornucopia looked like a torch at first to me!

Many, many thanks!
