3 Dirhams: fake or genuine?
« on: March 26, 2007, 02:49:53 pm »
Hello,

I recently bought these 3 islamic dirhams but now doubts arise whether they are genuine or not.
A friend of mine already showed me a second arab sasanian dirham whith identical dies on the obverse and reverse.

Islam1 weighs 3,4 grams, islam2 weighs 3,7 grams, and islam3 5,4 grams.

What do the specialists think?

Are all three from the same dealer?  With the similar toning on all three, it would raise flags, but would not make it certain that they are fakes.

The Arab-Sasanian coin weighs 5.4 grams?   If so, it is a fake!  Arab-Sasanian coins rarely weigh over 4 grams, with most around 3.8 grams.

As for the other two, I also believe their weights are off, but would have to send more time checking my references.

The top two Umayyad coins are also overweight.  Mitchiner does not list a single Umayyad Dirhem over 3.0 grams.  Most are in the 2.6 to 2.9 grams range.  Looks like these are also most likely fakes.
