Hi Bob

Cyprus, carzia of Pietro Loredan (doge 1567-1570)

Obv: +S.MARCVS.VENETVS round lion rampant
Rev: +PETRVS.LAVREDA.DUX round cross.

Apparently a very scarce issue (my reference ['The coins of Cyprus 1489-1571', by S. Gardiakos, 1969] states only two examples of this variety with unbarred A's known to him, and only one with barred A's), just before the final Turkish conquest of the island.

Best wishes

Alan

Hi Alan,

Thank you so very much! I am happy that I found a scarce issue.

A question, Alan, Am I incorrect in defining these coins as "Crusader"? If so, what should I call them?

Hi Bob

Metcalfe talks about everything up to the Turkish conquest. The title of his book is 'Coins of the Crusades and the "Latin East" [my inverted commas]' so I suppose these later coins issued long after the last Crusaders had left the Holy Land should be called generically 'coins of the Latin East' but 'Crusader' is much less clumsy, even if not strictly accurate.

Best wishes

Alan

These coins would be considered Venetian colonial coins.
