Ric VI frustration
« on: March 04, 2007, 06:22:26 pm »
Hi Guys,

I am going totally crazy trying to attribute a Licinius I coin. I have it narrowed to 111-120,  specificaly 111 a or b, 112, or 114, but for the life of me, I cannot narrow it down. Where are the bust types in VI ? Either I am way off, or I am missing something. If someone can give me the correct attribution, I think I can figure out how this version works. ( I Hope ). Please help me retain my sanity.

Chuck,

Obv. legend is 2a (p. 677), so the only choice is between RIC 111b and 114b.

Both of those have bust (A), which is specified at the top of the preceding page, p. 678, as Head laureate r.

The difference is in the wreath ties, alpha for 111b = divergent ties, pointed truncation, beta for 114b = parallel ties, pointed truncation.

Your ties diverge, one crossing over the neck, so your coin is RIC 111b, officina S, cited from the Vienna collection.

Thanks Curtis!

I don't know how I missed that one, I must have been at this too long today. Sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees I guess. Once again, Thank you for your help. I was looking for a page with a table of bust types, and didn't see what was in front of my eyes.
