Hadrian - odd legend/title
« on: February 25, 2007, 02:29:12 pm »
Hi all -

Am posting this Hadrian piece I aquired today - The legend is a bit odd... I cannot find a reference for it. It reads:

IMP CAE (or CAR) TRAIAN HA...etc.  Please see picture.  No doubt it's a Hadrian denarius - reverse pretty worn, but it looks to be a Pax figure...

All the references I have seen say the legend should read IMP CAES TRAIAN...etc.  Any ideas? The portrait is very nice, I think!

Hi Dave

Your legend says IMP CAESAR TRAIAN HADRIANVS AVG, but the IMP starts right under the front of the bust so is mostly off the flan and the CAE is below the right shoulder. What you see as possibly CAR is actually the second half of caeSAR.

Best wishes

Alan

Coin is from a scarce early Eastern series, rev. P M TR POTES COS III or same with III after POTES, Fortuna standing l. holding rudder and cornucopia, Strack *8 or *11, pl. XX.

That one is particularly nice because of the large Medusa head and snakes on the l. shoulder of the portrait.
