Postumus AR Denarius
« on: February 24, 2007, 09:21:57 am »
This was included in a lot from fritz rudolf kuenker auction house...
I can't find anything similar - real, fake or otherwise.
It appears to be a postumus ar denarius with jugate heads of postumus and hercules, and some sort of scene of hercules on the reverse.
Any thoughts?

This appears to be Sear 11010, O: conjoined busts of Postumus and Hercules r. POSTVMVS PIVS FELIX AVG
R: HERCVLI ERVMANTINO, Hercules adv rt carrying wild Erymanthian boar, wine jar at feet. RIC 344, RSC 119, minted COLOGNE, CE 268 F $550, VF $1500 EF $3500 according to SEAR.

according to Sear "many of the rare denarii of this reign are of fine style and would seem to be patterns for aurei rather than normal billon coinage struck for circulation."

Hope this helps
