Can't believe I can't ID this! Help!
« on: February 23, 2007, 10:45:13 pm »
Hello to all -

I can't believe I can't ID this one.... ??? :-[

The obverse is pretty nice... the reverse is NOT. This was in a lot of Provincials... I got 30 total... all but 6 I was able to identify pretty well! THIS ONE should be EASY.

I am thinking it is not provincial - Well, STILL cannot identify it. Coin is 22 mm... bronze. On the LEFT side of the obverse....
last 2 letters ... I'm pretty sure last letter is S. The letter before it looks like a sloppy R... but I've seen odd Roman Qs and Gs that look like this.  ReverseVictory (or Nike) advances to the left... can't really read anything there... on the right side I can see either AV or  :Greek_Pi:V.

The portrait looks too "chubby" for Anotninus Pius... too old for Commodus and Elegabulus... don't see a similar entry for Macrinus.

Many thanks to all!

Perhaps Caracalla from Stobi in Macedonia? I'll check more when I can.

Perhaps an obv legend of M AVREL ANTONIN
Rev MVNIC STOBENS (or similar) Nike advancing left, holding wreath & palm (I think I can see TOBE in the right rev legend, but I may be dreaming)
Moushmov 6553, or variant

Thanks Mark -

I had found that particular piece while searching for Caracalla's coins - And yes, I can make out Stobi with coin in hand.

What threw me off was the "E" or "S" at end of left legend.... and the V at end of right legend...does not QUITE match M6553 - so I supppose some sort of variant of that coin!

Again, many many thanks!

You need to post the coin in the Roman Provincial section, be sure to put "Stobi" in the subjectd line to see if you can get whitetd49 to comment on the coin -- he is Mr. Stobi.

I can't be too sure about the reverse but I think that this is your coin:

M AVRE ANTONINV
Laureate bust, right
MVNIC STOBEN
Nike advancing left with wreath and palm
Same obverse die (V26) as Josifovski 304, citing specimen in Vienna, KHM 9906
Reverse die unlisted

Many many thanks, Whited 49 -

Yes, that is my coin.  The obverse legend was one I couldn't find... you've got it exactly on the obverse.  Sadly the reverse is a bit too worn to tell, but I think you have it! And thanks again, Mark, for all your help.

I'm sort of excited to have a STOBI coin... it's my first!

For what it is worth, Moushmov 6553 is correct for this type.  Also, Cohen IV 721, BMCG 15-16, SNG Cop 334.  Unfortunately, such an attribution does not account for legend or bust type variations, nor does it account even for module.  Yours is an AE 23-24, diassaria.
