Seleucid ID help requested
« on: February 02, 2007, 07:51:40 pm »
Hi all!

I have about 4 Seleucid pieces -- I am wondering about this one!  I have some tentative ID's - but thought I'd let the experts guide me here.

Obverse - youthful head looking right, radiate
Reverse: Apollo looking right, leaning on bow.

I sure can't read the lettering - Maybe someone can!

Many thanks!

Apollo is looking left at the arrow he is holding.  This is early in the Seleukid series of rulers.  What is the diameter of this coin?

I think it should be a small AE15 of seleukos II,

Thanks folks!

Diameter is 11 mm.

One I found that is close is SNGIs 583  *DS*Antiochus III, AE 12, Apollo standing rev  -- from Seleucid Coins website.

I wouldn't be surprise if it is Antiochus III.  He issued a huge amount of coins!
