batibaleno - The Roman Imperials
« on: February 01, 2007, 09:48:13 am »
I thought it might be worthwhile creating a post containing the full set of offerings of dangerous casts from the fake seller "batibaleno".
I thought it best to split the coins into groups and so have included the imperial coins here, Greek coins and Republican coin will have their own threads.
Regards,
Martin

Excellent work. A great contribution towards dealing with this nasty individual.
Every day I know less and less about more and more. Soon I expect to know nothing about everything.

Just to let you know how dangerous some of these coins can be out of this context, Jeff Clark has pointed out that the Caligula above made it into the Lanz sale last November (hmm not sure if I should mention it here though! Delete this if you think it appropriate Joe.).

And it went for €1,300 to boot!   A lot better than it would fetch on eBay.

Martin, could you please, give some details on this exhibition.
What a technology was used to produce fakes? To my eyes there some
coins which looks genuine, judging from photos. Others look as casts of genuine coins,
another as newly manufactured or casts of the latter...

I have come to the conclusion that all are high quality pressure casts. Many are based on known fakes, coins that are sold as fakes on ebay, some are casts of modern Bulgarian Fakes from the "Lipanoff" studio for example. 95% have been identified as being matches to 'empire_gallery', 'imperatorial' and others during the last 12 months. They are being sold out of Bulgaria.

How one can have a confidence to  coins coming from Bulgaria if
such high quality fakes are produced there in mass?
The last example of Antoninus Pius is very crisp, flan is irregular and even
there is a subtle toning. It is not an expensive coin for which efforts are believed
to be rentable...

Whenever an ebay seller has crisp EF's of every emperor it is time to get suspicious, especially if they are not a certified of renowned dealer.

We experienced already some cases when the most experienced/certified/renowned  sellers
(selling hundred of thousands coins)  were trapped by some fakes and they remained sure that
the coins were authentic though Forum members shown multiple clons of their auction.
Note that not coins all of this crook are EF some of them exhibit wear.
I am already very suspicious to Roman silver. If these guys are so smart to make such a variety of high
quality copies  they are smart enough to find channels for their distribution...

A good fake seller would probably mix the real coins with his fakes. This makes them harder to spot. There are a few dealers on the fake sellers list who do this.

Thank you very much for all the hard work you have done exposing this faker.  Unfortunately, his gulling of the innocent continues unabated.  Any idea as to how to rouse Ebay from their torpor?  After all, it's their reputation too.
Anyway, just wanted to let you know how appreciated your efforts are, and how superb the fakes site is.  Best regards, C.A. Stein, M.D., Ph.D.

And another update. Four coins this time, 1 Trajan, 1 Hadrian and 2 Antoninus Pius.
I would like to stress that this thread is not the only place I am putting these coins. They have all been added to the fake reports, where they can be seen in more detail. Do a search on batibaleno and you will see them all.

In answer to you question, equanimitas, I can only encourage other members here to report this seller to ebay. I have done so and so have others but they are not listening. When reporting the seller, I have identified several coins giving the evidence trail (other examples etc.). I am considering creating a thread to contain a few of the coins with their associated evidence that several of us can point ebay towards to see if we can get this guy closed down.

In the mean time we are building a good catalog of these fakes but people are being conned in the mean time.

What do people think about the creating a thread idea? If I do it, will other people volunteer to report this guy too?
Regards,
Martin

I'm in.  The sheer quantity of junk this guy is pouring into the market makes buying even common silver a pain in the rear.

Thanks Joe,
I was hoping to use the thread https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=35383.0 as the basis. I can expand the thread further adding several other examples if it would of benefit. Let me know what you think.

The thread is really well done.  We'll see what Ebay does if anything.  If they do forward the complaints to the ANA as they say, the thread gives ample evidence.  Good Job :)

Unfortunately, all the people in Ebay's Complaints Dept. are retired crash test dummies. Up until now, nothing really got them working.
