Nero Sestertius Tooled?
« on: July 23, 2012, 12:47:33 pm »
This coin was recently sold on *Bay along with several other listings of coins that all seemed to be in the same uniformly "nice" condition.

The hair on this one seems to be tooled. In fact, it looks like he has a headband on.

Am I correct?

The style of the "laureate" looks strange to me too!

It's a tennis player's headband. No doubt Nero is limbering up for the Olympics. I've tickets for the women's tennis gold-medal match and men's-doubles gold-medal match on 4th August in Wimbledon. I'm curious who will be there. Will Nero be in the Emperor's box alongside the Duchess of Kent, or on the court?

On the court, no doubt, repeating his runaway sucess in the Games of AD 67. Will he be entering a ten-horse chariot this time, I wonder, or did he learn his lesson last time around?

Here's another from the same seller, this time a Claudius.

Both sides tooled?

Spes looks awful. I can't remember ever seeing a Spes on a Claudius sestertius where you couldn't see her legs clearly through the fabric. It looks like the kind of art you'd expect to see in a coloring book.

Now, here is one more from the same seller that I could not tell whether or not it had been tooled.

Smoothed?

I had saved that last one as a coin of interest but the fact it was so smooth turned me off to it as I thought as you did it did not look right almost too smooth though I do not propose to be an expert so I could be wrong and it looks fine.

Please tell me they are only doing this to slugs and not to coins that weren't too bad in the first place.  :(

I think sometimes they are doing it to cast fakes to cover up that they are cast fakes

All,

This time the patina looks very strange, like the coin has been dipped in something.

Or is it just me?
