Medieval ID Needed
« on: November 30, 2006, 12:46:51 am »
A friend asked for this piece to be ID'ed. He said it was part of a hoard of 250 coins, vast majority being drams of Levon I. Along were some crusader coins.

Here is the pic, and thanks in advance.

Hmm, it has since been identified to  - "Poppo, bishop of Metz 1090-1104. The legend on the building-side should be read : +POPPO METN-S EP-S (= Poppo, Metensis episcopus). The item above, however, bears the ending PE-S, which is of no importance. The right side is displayed upside down and should be read S STEPHANVS, as stated by Tony Merson. The Dannenberg Catalogue lists the Type as Nr. 50. In Flon, Histoire monétaire de la Lorraine et des trois-évêches, it is Vol 1, p.192 Nr. 7."
