ID help request - Indian?
« on: November 13, 2007, 09:08:22 pm »
Hi!

A friend on the Portuguese Forum asked that I post these to coins here... both about 21 mm.  Both similar in appearance.  Does anyone have a clue to WHERE and WHEN these pieces were minted?  I have found nothing so far!

Many thanks in advance!

When I get a chance I'll look it up later, but I am fairly certain it is from Indonesia.

I've got a very similar one; mine's from the Indonesian state of Aceh (also spelled Acheh or Atjeh). The bottom one of yours appears to be dated 1224 AH, roughly equating to 1809 AD. It's made of tin.

Unfortunately, these coins don't show up in my 4th edition of the 19th century Krause catalogue; apparently, Krause accidentally deleted all "Indonesian" coins between 1806 and 1850 from inclusion! I'm told they've been restored in the recently released 5th edition, and they are on Krause's NumisMaster website; a note there indicates these may have actually been struck in the 1840's.
I'll have to learn Latin someday.
