Hi Tanit

It is a billon 2 kharub piece from Tunis, struck in 1153H/ 1740-41 AD in the name of the Ottoman sultan Mahmud I (1143-1168H/ 1730-1754 AD), KM 44.2 in the Krause 18th century catalogue.

Best wishes

Thank you Alan

The metal is white, I thought that it was of silver.

Hi Tanit

Billon means less than 50% silver, and the silver purity was about 46.5% for the Turkish coins at this time, so I would think these Tunisian ones would be a little less. It will still look pretty white: it's not until you get under 30% that you start to get very grey alloys.

Best wishes

Alan
