Hi Starman and Welcome  :)
No unfortunately it is not silver, that cross fibula was made of bronze.Recently i dug for the first time this type of fibula. It was forged from one peace, and that is why i believe that this is Celtic fibula.
Unfortunately needle is missing and also spring fragment.
I will ask otlichnik for help me identify this fibula, because i found it on the field with 4-th century coins, but as i say i believe it is Celtic.Am i right?
Best Regards
Marcus

Starman,

You are right that the silver fibula is very similar to Marcus'.  There are actually 5 major, and several minor types of the cross-bow fibula dating mid-3rd to mid-5th centuries.  About 95% or more are bronze, with say 4% silver and less than 1% gold (never sold to the likes of us).

Marcus,

Hard to say exactly what that new fibula is but the type seems closer to a "leech" fibula or sanguisugafibel.  I have a couple similar and I have catalogued them as 6th-5th centuries BC.  In the western Balkans this is pre-Celtic and is in fact late Iron Age (i.e Istrian Iron Age IV and similar epochs).

That said, second option is La Tene I era 4th-3rd centuries BC in which case you are into Celtic though the Balkan population was actually quite mixed then.

Hello
I found only one Serbian. It is Djuradj Brankovic silver coin. But i hunt mostly Roman and Celtic fields. It is not unusual to find some Serbian coins here, but you must hunt Medieval fields.First you must learn to recognize broken ceramics on the fields.I like to hunt on the fields with thick gray (gray-blue) ceramics and very small and sporadic red ceramics with no ornaments. That will be 1-st century and Celtic. When you found particoloured ceramics with lot ornaments ... it is most probably 3-rd or 4-th Century Roman or light yellow ceramics-that will be Medieval.
Best Regards

Marcus, did you ever come up with  coin-density number in any way? ( or whatever it is called )  For example, in  northern Russia  people say there are 1 scale-coin ( 0.2-0.5 grams  of silver, minted  between XV and XVII centuaries)  per 700  sq meters, on the average of course. Luckily  for us such coins were easy to lose.

... and it is still winter, maybe not the best time to be out looking for coins.

Maybe the law caught up with him.

As areich notes, he was last active only three days ago.

His country is going through much upheaval at present.
His wife is pregnant.
He may have limited time to search for coins.  But yes, it is spring. He may have much to show us soon.

I would be the happiest person on Earth if I found ANY ancient roman coins in my back yard.... That would mean that the Romans made it to Texas 1200-1300 years before anyone else did....  :(

lol Indeed. However I said coins...not ancients. Although that would be awesome. I'll bet if one lived in Italy or the Middle-east you could find some really cool stuff though.

And propmtly get incarcenated!! ;D

Welcome back. I, for one, have missed your regular posts of "finds". Actually I loved the fibula, I am always interested in the artifacts you find - as well as the coins.

All of this stuff that you find is awesome.  Do you all use metal Detectors?  If so, what brand?  I use Whites XLT's.  I live in the U.S., and would lover to be able to find coins as old as those that you find.  The oldest coin I have found is a 1921 Buffalo Nickel.  I also like to go American Civil War relic hunting.  I love digging up pieces of the past.  The way that I look at it is sure archaeologists do digs, but they wouldn't waste their time on 1 bullet, or 1 coin.  I spend hours swinging my detector, and usually only come home with a bunch of clad coins and a few wheat pennies.  Sorry to get off topic, it is just my dream to someday be able to dig up things as old as you find.  Way to go.

Andy

Sorry for late reply Andy     i have some bad arm injury so i did not hunt munch lately..therefore i did not post anything, but now i am doing ok and i hope i will be able to post some nice coins in the future.....
I use White`s DFX metal detector for about one year... before that i used Whites Eagle Spectrum,White`s Classic III and Fisher 1266 ....
This is my last coin...very nice Nerva denarius,my best Nerva untill now......
Best Regards
Marcus
