Reading date on a dirham of Kaykhusraw II
« on: May 21, 2006, 03:09:03 pm »
Another recent purchase, I am wondering if somone can help reading part of date on this coin:

Obverse:
ﻦﻴﻨﻣﺆﻤﻟﺍﺮﻴﻣﺍﻪﻠﻟﺎﺑﺮﺼﻨﺘﺴﻤﻟﺍ ﻡﺎﻣﻻﺍName of Caliph Al-Mustansir.

Reverse:
ﻢﻈﻋﻻﺍ ﻥﺎﻄﻠﺴﻟﺍ
ﻦﻳﺪﻟﺍﻭ ﺎﻴﻧﺪﻟﺍ ﺙﺎﻴﻏ
ﺩﺎﺒﻘﻴﻛ ﻦﺑ ﻭﺮﺴﺨﻴﻛ
(ﺔﺋﺎﻤﺘﺳ ﻭ ﻦﻴﺜﻼﺛ ﻭ ﻊﺴﺗ ﺔﻨﺳ - ﺔﻴﻧﻮﻘﺑ ﺏﺮﺿ)

Name of Kaykhusraw and his titles, and mint and date.
------------

Mint and date is clear but I am not sure how it is written at 3:00. ﺔﺋﺎﻤﺘﺳﻭ ﻦﻴﺜﻼﺛﻭ "And Thirty and Six Hundred"?

Can anyone correct me?

Sincerely,
Levon

Hi Levon

The date is 639, the right hand word at the bottom of the reverse being tis' (nine).

The inscription at right is a very abbreviated version of "sitt mi'at thelathin" with just the "at thin" being engraved, the full date legend reading (from bottom left) "sanat tis' thin at" for "sanat tis' [thela]thin [sitt mi']at"

See Mitchiner WOI 978 for an identical coin.

Best wishes

Is the margin like so?

(ﺔﺋﺎﻤﺘﺳ ﻊﺴﺗ ﺔﻨﺳ - ﺔﻴﻧﻮﻘﺑ ﺏﺮﺿ)

Hi Levon

I hope this works:

Lower margin: ﺴﻨﺔ ﺗﺴﻊ

Right margin: ﺛﻦ ﺔ
as abbreviation for ﺛﻠﺛﻴﻦ ﺴﺖ ﻣﺌﺔ

[Edit: thanks for the advice on size, it works with a little bit of fiddling]

Best wishes

Like so?

( ﺔﻦﺛ ﻊﺴﺗ ﺔﻨﺳ - ﺔﻴﻧﻮﻘﺑ ﺏﺮﺿ)

ﺔﻦﺛ for ﺔﺌﻣ ﺖﺴ ﻦﻴﺜﻼﺛ

Levon

P.S. For attributes use [] instead of <> amd size=14 pt or someting and /size at the end, if you cannot see buttons for tag at top when posting.

and this would be translated to:

(  SXTHRTY(?) Year Nine - Struck in Konya)

ﺔﻦﺛ short form of ﺔﺌﻣ ﺖﺴ ﻦﻴﺜﻼﺛ which spells out six hundred thirty?

Sincerely,
Levon

P.S. Sorry for the bombardment of questions. Reading regular dirhams is harder than the bilinguals. I tried using Nercessians attribution and dating of bilingual drams.

Hi Levon

I tried replying last night but the connection to the server was sooo slooow that it kept timing out. I did manage to correct my earlier post (using your suggestions) though.

I think the 'translation' of the legend would be nearer 'RED ['six hund' being assumed] THIR ['ty' assumed] NINE YEAR'. I suppose they thought everyone knew what century they were in ;D.

Best wishes
