What's so special about this coin?
« on: March 31, 2003, 07:36:01 am »
Here's a test for you all! What's special about this coin? It looks just like any other S.Alexander bronze from Nicaea with standards (or aquila or combination) on the rev., or..?

Well, sure the armour is unusually well presented, but that's not it. 8)

From what I can see, I'd also go with Caesar.  It could also be the great looking portrait, but I might be bias.  :)

It's the fact that the coin is issued as Caesar which, to me, makes at more than a cut above the typical Nicaea standards reverses. Well done!

I was quite pleased to note this fact (and the fact that the coin overall is rather nice with interesting patination), especially so since it came in a lot and cost me very little. Roman coins from S.Alex caesar are, as you all know, quite expensive.

The obv legend ends KAI, in addition to which the style is very different from the probably 100-1000 times more common Augustus coins.

Easy way to tell is that my, oops... I mean Severus Alexander's head isn't laureled.  That will usually indicate not Augustus yet.

That's how I knew it was Caesar-the bare head. Plus the portrait style and a few other things, but mostly the bare head.

I've been told this one is a Caesar as well:
