Islamic? AE14 ID Help
« on: January 05, 2006, 08:08:04 am »
Hello,

I have here what I think is an Islamic coin.  Beyond the measurements, I know nothing else about it.  Can someone please tell me what it is along with a date and reference number if possible.  Also, please tell me which is the obverse and reverse and the proper orientation if I got it wrong (which I likely did ::)).

Thanks,

Kevin  :)

Hi Kevin!

Looks 15th century to me. Perhaps an Ottoman mangir. Maybe someone more knoweledgable will be able to help. You may also try zeno.ru

Best,
Levon

It looks to be Valentine #38.  This is a coin issued by Muhammad II (855-886 A.D.).  Coin 38 Valentine attributes to Adrana and says it is undated.

Obv. Muh bin (Murad)
Rev. Kallad mulkah - Adrana

If I read Valentine's handwritting correctly.

Hi

This is not Adrana. Valetine made many mistakes in reading mints. The mint is Adrina, which is Edirne or Adrianople in ancient times. It is also not Muhammad II but Mehmed II. On Turkish coins you will never read Muhammad.

Best wishes,
Burak
