Looks Byz. w/ Double-headed eagle?? Help pls...
« on: October 29, 2005, 03:05:37 pm »
AE19 and VERY thin - only .6g. Figure holding cross w/ star(?) at lower left. Reverse looks like a double-headed eagle. I checked most of the major Byz. emperors but came up empty. Any ideas on this interesting one?? Thanks...

Because shi is Bulgarian.

Vidin. 1370s.

Obverse: Double-headed eagle, with wings speared. On each head, triple peak crown. Between heads - radiant star. Variants: no crowns; three pellets between heads.

Reverse: Monogram TCAR on r. field. Tcar standing facing, wearing stema, sakos and loros. In r. hand holding sceptre, in l. hand holding the end of the loros. Variants: radiant star on l. field; cyrilic Monogram CP /SR/ on l. field.

Thank you!! I know nothing about Bulgarian coins! I thought Byzantine because of the dots on the front of the figure and it's holding a cross. Very rare!! That's good...it's my first Bulgarian coin.
Would it be considered a Medieval coin?
