Eburons
« on: July 17, 2005, 08:56:42 am »
Hello,
I am not a Celtic coins collectors ( I wish I could be one) but I would like to know more about the coins of the Eburons (Belgium).  At the Galo Roman musseum in Tongeren (Belgium) I saw several clasified as made by the Eburons.  Could someone tell me where to see more or learn about them?
Thank you

Eduardo

I visited also the museum at Tongres (I live in Belgium, so it's easy 8)).
I searched the Net and I found nothing extra on it.
I saw that the Celtic Coin Index (a huge database on Britisch Celtic coins http://www.writer2001.com/cciwriter2001/index.htm) is constructing an index of Gallo-Belgic coins.
Maybe you can contact the museum for further info.
Their archeologists have an email adress for questions and remarks (archeologie@limburg.be).
I would give it a try.
When I find something extra, I will post it.
Maybe if you receive an answer, you can post it also here.
Grtz,
Nico

Thank you Sseverus,

I will follow your advise.  My grandfather used to say that we belonged to the Eburons. Our family is originally from Dinant and most of it lives in the Liege area.  We are the peruavian branch and althought my father was born in Flemalle of a peruvian mother in 1919, we can claim we are in Perú since 1912.  Almost a century now. Where in Belgium do you live?  My history master's thesis is "The Flemish in colonial South América.  We are slowly working in a flemish translation of the book but if you are willing to give it a try in spanish I can send you a photodopy (the edition is sold).

Hello Eduardo,
I live in Flanders. In the neighbourhood of Leuven (Louvain in french).
Great stuff your website ;). Very nice. (some nice coins too)
I wish I could read and speak spanish, so that I could read your thesis. But I can't :-\.
I'm working with the rail-road, but in October I'm going to follow history at the university of Brussels (evening college). :)
So maybe you can help me in the future :D.
If you have any questions, please contact me.

Hello Eduardo and Nico,

I live not far from Leuven in Belgium, in a small town called Landen, on the boarder of the province Limburg. It's not far from Luik (Liège, Lüttich).
I'm a celtic coin collector for about 20 years now and my speciality is celtic coins of the Belgian tribes - the area between the Seine in France and the Rhine in Germany.
If you want more information about the Eburones and other Belgian tribes, here's a link of an Belgian forum (Dutch language but most of the users understand Englisch, German and French) about celtic coins of which I'm also the moderator:
http://www.muntstukken.be/forum/index.php?board=16.0
I have also very good relations with the people of the K.U.L. (university of Leuven).

best regards,

Catuvolcos

Hello Catuvolcos,
I will write this also in english, so that the other members can also follow ;).
I live in Aarschot, so it's not so far from Landen.
I do collect greeks, romans and for a little while celts.
I'm seriosly thinking about it to start also a collection of celtic coins from the tribes who lived on our soil. But if I'm right, it 's rather costly :-\?

Nico

Hello Catuvolcos,

Thank you for your post, I have roamed in it a bit and will come back after classes. Although a good part of my research work has been about the Flemish in Perú and South America I never got to learn Duch.  A pitty.  In any case if I find something that seems interesting I have enough flemish friends here, including my dean at the university, to translate it.

I Have only one celtic coin which I believed to be from Massilia but it is from northern Italy.  I include it here.

My offer of a photocopy of my thesis "The Flemish in Colonial South America is also for you if you are interested till we have a Duch translation.

Hello Eduardo,
indeed, I'm going to study on the VUB. I think I would try to specialise in ancient history and there after to get a specialisation degree in archeology. Thanks to the new system in Belgium, it is possible to archive this ( 2 degrees) in 5 years.
When you come to Belgium, let me know something. You are very welcome.
Grtz,
Nico

Helo Nico,

Thank you for your offer.  I think that if my book is publish in Neerlandese I will go to Belgium for the presentation.  Two years ago I was in Belgium for the last time. The Christofel Plantin Fonds in Antwerpen gave me their annual award for my work on behalph of a better knowledge of Belgium abroad.  It is given each year to a Belgian living abroad.  I don't know now when the next trip will be but the publication of the book could be a good oportunity.

Thank you Niko.

I will sure contact you.  Now I am working in the presence of Belgians since the independence.  As you know, previous to independence of Perú (1821) no foreigners were easily allowed into the Spanish colonies.  Flemish came during the XVI and XVII century because Flanders was part of the Empire.  For some time Perú and Flanders had the same king.  Our first presidente married a Belgian and today´s president of Perú is also married to a Belgian.
